We Apologize For The Inconvenience

Water main breaks can happen at any time of the day or night.  Once a water main break is pinpointed crews try to notify residents in the effected area by knocking on doors to let them know the water may need to be turned off.  Repairs usually take 3 - 4 hours and crews work as quickly as possible to restore water and water pressure to the residents. Thank you for your understanding.

Water mains are made of several materials, the most common being cast iron, that are subject to leaks and breaks due to stress, corrosion and changes in water pressure because of seasonal demand. The Water Maintenance Division is responsible for repairing these water mains and any concrete or landscaping (in conjunction with the Highway & Engineering Departments) associated with digging to make repairs.

sediment

Discolored Water

If you experience discolored water it's usually due to sediment being stirred up when there's a large draw of water, either from a water main break or a fire hydrant being used.  Above is an example of sediment in an old pipe.  The water is safe to use, but if you are uncomfortable you may boil for 10 minutes.  However, please do not do any wash or run your hot water (see below).

What Should I Do To Clear The Water?

After work is completed the sediment will settle down.  To speed the process we ask that you DO NOT use the water (this keeps the sediment stirred up).  Please try the cold water faucet closest to the meter (usually in the basement) and let it run for 20 seconds, if the water is still discolored do not use the water for 30 - 45 minutes and try again.  Once the water is clear you may return to normal use.

Please Do Not Do Wash Or Run Hot Water

We ask that you do not do the wash as it could discolor the fabric. If you have, do not dry the clothes. The Department of Public Service, 1600 N Campbell Rd, has a product, at no charge, that will take out the stain. Public Service is open M - F 7:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.  Also, please do not use the hot water, it does not harm the hot water tank but does take longer to empty out.
