The Royal Oak Veterans Events Committee will host its annual Ruck 22 March on Saturday, Nov. 9 at 10 a.m. at Centennial Commons, corner of Third and Troy Streets, Royal Oak.
WHAT TO PUT IN YOUR RUCK or BACKPACK
The Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 154 will be preparing Thanksgiving baskets for Veterans in need. The items on the list below are a priority. Many are inexpensive and light in weight and are perfect for carrying in your ruck or backpack!
- Stuffing mixes
- Cranberries
- Canned green beans, corn, or other canned vegetables
- Instant mashed potatoes
- Gravy mix
- A family-size box of macaroni and cheese
- Grocery store gift cards (to help with the purchase of perishable items)
WHAT IS A RUCK MARCH?
A ruck march involves walking at a fast clip with a weighted backpack. In the Armed Forces, participants carry at least 45 lbs. in their ruck, in addition to all their military gear.
For this event we ask participants to march/walk a 2.2-mile course while, if able, carrying 22 pounds or 22 donated items.
WHY 22?
Every day an average of 22 veterans commit suicide in the United States. We carry '22' to show our support for veterans in crisis or need and their families.
All personal items and food collected will be donated to the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 154 to be used to support veterans and their families. All monies will be donated to local organizations that support vets in need.
