Highway

Responsibilities

The Highway Division is responsible for a variety of operations related to street maintenance, City signage, guardrails, some street paintings, snow plowing and assisting other departments as needed.

Maintenance of Roads

This covers small street repairs such as potholes, grading dirt/gravel roads, repairing small areas of concrete and asphalt streets. To report a pothole please contact DPS pothole repair.

The Engineering Department handles major street repairs; such as resurfacing projects, large concrete pavement repairs, joint sealing, reconstruction improvements as well as other major projects.

Signs, Guardrails & Painting

This includes the installation, removal and repair of regulatory, warning and guide signs throughout the City of Royal Oak. Street painting is also included and covers crosswalks, parking lots and intersection markings (center-line and lane designation painting is done once a year by a contractor). Guardrail installation and repair are also maintained by this division with the exception of 12 Mile, please contact the Road Commission of Oakland County at (248) 858-4804.

Winter Maintenance

This includes plowing and salting of major streets and specific intersections when conditions warrant. Major roads (11 Mile, Main, Crooks, etc.) are also plowed if a sufficient amount of snow has fallen to cause hazardous driving conditions. If four inches or more of snow accumulates or is forecasted residential streets are plowed on a rotating basis 24-hours a day until all streets are cleared.  Approximately 5,500 tons of salt is used in this operation each year. Residents can call the snow emergency hotline at (248) 246-3442 for updated information.
