Composting Pilot

Royal Oak Food Waste Reduction Pilot

Thank you to everyone who attended yesterday's Happy Hour at Achemi. It was a wonderful event leading into the launch of our composting pilot. Starting on February 24th, Royal Oak Sustainability will offer free composting drop-offs at the Royal Oak Farmers Market from 8 AM until Noon. This is a three-month trial to gain insight and interest on how best to serve Royal Oak residents, businesses, and organizations. We will also be partnering with local businesses and organizations to offer educational resources, workshops, and participation in curbside options.  LEARN MORE!

Composting Guide

We created a handy composting guide for composting at the Farmer's Market or with one of our curbside partners. This guide offers photos and a list of items to include and exclude for the composting pilot. Please be advised that our list is more comprehensive than what you should put in your home composting system or your yard waste bags come spring.  VIEW THE COMPOST GUIDE

In a conversation with SOCRRA, we were able to get some clarity on what they accept in yard waste bins/bags. When you place items into your yard waste bin, they are taken to a composting facility, but food waste is limited to just fruit and vegetable scraps due to a contractual relationship with a neighboring neighborhood. Paper, eggshells, leftover food, etc., while compostable, cannot be added to your yard waste bags. VIEW SOCRRA'S YARD WASTE GUIDE

Interested in Volunteering?

We are looking for a few volunteers who want to help with the Food Waste Reduction Pilot on Saturday mornings at the farmers market. Please email sustainability@romi.gov to learn more.
