Responsibilities
The Parks & Forestry Division is responsible for maintaining the following:
- 43 traffic islands
- 49 park sites of over 310 acres
- 8 boulevards of over 28 acres
- Grounds adjacent to most City buildings and City parking lots
- Over 19,000 easement trees (exclusive of park and boulevard trees) in conjunction with a contractor
- Royal Oak Cemetery
In addition, this division regularly maintains city parks baseball/softball fields, soccer fields, football fields and sand volleyball courts during their respective seasons. Alongside Building Maintenance, parks employees also help to install and maintain all park playground equipment, fences and backstops.
Community Promotion
The Parks & Forestry Division is responsible for the installation and removal of street banners and, along with other departments, setting up for special events.
Snow Removal
The Parks & Forestry division, in conjunction with other departments, is responsible for snow removal in city parking lots, sidewalks adjacent to parks and city buildings and sidewalks in the downtown area (if there is a snowfall of 1" or more).
Businesses are responsible for ice conditions in front of their store, i.e. salting. Parks also assist with street plowing during snow storms.
