Sunday Hours?

Print

The Board of Trustees of ROPL is studying the feasibility of having the library open on Sundays. During the 2008 strategic planning process, community participants expressed a strong desire to have Sunday hours. Since then ROPL has experienced severe revenue declines because its funding is based on property values which have suffered in the economic downturn of the past several years. The fiscal year 2010-11 library revenue is $376,000 lower than fiscal year 2007-8. ROPL cannot open on Sunday in addition to the current Monday – Saturday, six day a week, 60 hours a week of service. However, the Board of Trustees and library administration are carefully considering switching open days. They are examining a proposal to be open on Sunday afternoons (possibly 1:00 PM – 6:00 PM) and shutting on Fridays. We are interested in your opinion and have included a very short survey here with the opportunity to add your comments which will be shared with the Library Board of Trustees.

Some advantages and disadvantages:

  • Sunday opening would be a shorter day (5 hours) than Friday (8 hours) so the total number of hours the library is open weekly would decrease from 60 to 57.
  • Some libraries which honor your ROPL library card are currently closed on Friday. They include Troy, Clawson, and Huntington Woods. (Neighboring libraries that are open on Friday include Berkley, Ferndale, Madison Heights, Baldwin, and Southfield.)
  • Some area libraries, which honor your ROPL library card, that are currently open on Sundays include Troy, Baldwin (Birmingham), and Southfield.
  • Parking in the nearby lots is free on Sundays.

After completing the survey below, please click 'Add comment' below if you wish to leave a comment.

ROPL Butterfly Garden Project Fall 2011 Update

butterfly_garden_update

It’s getting late in the season, but not too late to visit the butterfly-friendly garden established on the grounds of the Royal Oak Public Library. The garden is complete with host and nectar plants and is growing more beautiful with year. This past spring and summer, Maria Blair, our new garden coordinator, along with her crew of volunteers, maintained and planted in the garden.

They recently planted fall flowers and dressed the garden up with pumpkins, just in time for the Time Capsule ceremony.

Plans are underway for a special dedication ceremony for the Butterfly Garden in June 2012. Many exciting Butterfly Garden events will take place next spring and summer!

Snapshot Royal Oak 2011 – The Time Capsule Project

Print

time_capsuleThe project involved gathering artifacts that reflect what life in Royal Oak is like. These items were buried on Saturday, October 1, 2011, in the Butterfly Garden on the lawn of ROPL in a sealed container to be dug up in 2046 when the City of Royal Oak is celebrating its 125th anniversary as a city. How different will Royal Oak be 35 years from now? And how much will it be the same? The Time Capsule Project has given us an opportunity to assess what a vibrant community we have and ponder its past and its future. When residents of 2046 dig up and open this time capsule they will discover what Royal Oak was like in 2011, which should evoke memories of the past and contribute hopes for the future of this community.
