Highlights 2009-2010

In the fiscal year ending in June 2010, Royal Oak residents continued to turn to the Royal Oak Public Library for their information and entertainment needs in increasing numbers. The circulation of library materials, the number of visits to the library, and the number of library card holders all continued to grow. However, the operating revenue declined as the nation’s economic problems directly impacted Royal Oak. Decreases in property values have resulted in decreased revenue generated by ROPL’s dedicated library millage. Other sources of operating revenue, including state aid to libraries, penal fines, and interest also declined significantly. Continued revenue decreases are projected for the next several years.

The challenge facing ROPL is “doing more with less.” I am pleased to report that we were able to complete FY 2009/2010 slightly under budget and adopt a two year budget without decreasing library hours. ROPL continues to be able to provide library service six days a week for 60 hours a week.

A variety of factors make it possible for ROPL “to do more with less” including prudent library board oversight; hardworking and knowledgeable staff; active support from the Friends of Royal Oak Public Library; a small army of dedicated volunteers; and hundreds of generous donors. It is a privilege to work with all of the people who make our library a success. Thank you for your support!
