David,
In checking our older city directories, I found listings for Baptist Children's Home starting in 1928. In the 1978-79 Bresser's Criss-Cross Directory, the name was changed to Detroit Baptist Children's Home. In the 1985-86 Bresser's directory, Judson Center was added to the same address, along with the Detroit Baptist Children's Home. In the 2001-2002 Bresser's Directory. the only name listed was Judson Center, with Detroit Baptist Children's Home removed. The address remained the same throughout the years - 4410 W. 13 Mile Road in Royal Oak. I checked our files in the Local History Room and found some history of the Judson Center. It began as an orphanage in 1924. The children included not only those who lost both parents, but also those with one parent who had to work and saw their children only on weekends. It also served as a home for the children of missionaries while they were gone doing missionary work. As for records or listings of names, the privacy issue comes into play. I spoke with Janice Morgan from the Judson Center and she would be happy to speak directly with you. She said she may have additional information for you but needs more information from you. You may contact her at 248-837-2027.
