Mackenzie Crea Smith

Mackenzie Crea "Kenzie" Smith, 6, of Clawson, died Feb. 12, 2008, after a courageous fight with kidney cancer. She was born May 1, 2001, in Detroit. Mackenzie Smith loved taking bubble baths, soccer, dressing up, getting massages with her mom, tea parties, drawing, music, dancing, learning, swimming at her grandparents' home at the lake and her family. She idolized her big brother and loved watching out for her sister. Mackenzie will be remembered as a very energetic, feisty, extremely intelligent and determined girl who was loved immensely by her family and friends. Mackenzie Smith is survived by her parents, Debra and Jeremy; brother, Cooper; twin sister, Madyson; best friend, Jane; grandparents, Stephen and Gallen Smith and John and Susan Quertermus; great-grandmothers, Sally White and June Simon; and aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Visitation, Thursday, 4-9 p.m., with children's time (with a social worker presentation) at 4:30, and Friday, 2-9 p.m., with a scripture service at 7 p.m., will be at Gramer Funeral Home, 705 N. Main St., Clawson. She will lie in state Saturday, 9 a.m. until 10 a.m. funeral Mass is celebratred at Guardian Angels Catholic Church. Burial will be at Holy Sepulchre following the funeral. Homer C. Brush

Homer C. Brush, 87, of Royal Oak, died Feb. 13, 2008, at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak. He was born June 24, 1920, in Raddle, Ill. Mr. Brush was a captain in the U.S. Coast Guard Reserves and served during World War II. He earned a master's degree from the University of Illinois and Wayne State University and received a Certificate of Completion from Cornell University. He taught high school and community college chemistry until 1957. He was then hired by the Chrysler Corporation, where he worked as a chemical engineer until 1983, when he became environmental engineering manager. Mr. Brush had a patent on drawing compound for metalworking and a Certificate of Merit for Chrysler Engineering. He was a member and past president of the Detroit branch of the American Electroplating Society and a Registered Professional Engineer in Michigan and Illinois. He was also a member of St. Columban Catholic Church in Birmingham. After retirement, he enjoyed traveling, golfing, home projects, photography and spending time with his family. Mr. Brush is survived by his son, Jim (Sandy) Brush; daughter, Marsha (Gary) Toth; grandchildren, Kristin Toth, Amanda (Dave) Bernard, Roxie Brush, Emily (Sebastian) Atar, James Brush and Michael Toth; great-grandson, Marcelo Atar; and brother, Melvin (Tillie) Brush. He was predeceased by his wife, Emma Mae; and brother, John Brush. Visitation, Friday, 3-9 p.m., and Friday evening rosary service will be at Lynch & Sons. Funeral Home, 1368 N. Crooks Road. Friends may visit at St. Columban Church, 1775 Melton, Birmingham, Saturday, 10 a.m. until the 10:30 funeral. Internment will be at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Southfield. James (King) Edwards

James (King) Edwards, 69, of Madison Heights, died Feb. 11, 2008, at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit. He was born June 7, 1938, in Detroit. Mr. Edwards was a U.S. Army veteran. He retired from Ford Motor Utica Trim in 2000 after 36 years of service. He enjoyed collecting trains, coins and stamps. Mr. Edwards is survived by his wife, Patricia, whom he married May 1971 in Detroit; children , Kathleen (Paul) Augustine of Hazel Park and James Edwards of Canton; sisters, Barbara (Ed) Ertzbischoff of Detroit and Joanne (Donald) Chambo of Gaylord; brother-in-law, John (Molly) Forness of Linolakes,. Minn.;. sister-in-law, Karen (Gene) Ruderer of Sterling Heights; father-in-law, John Forness of Warren; and many nieces and nephews. Visitation, Thursday, 5-9 p.m., and Friday, 2-9 p.m., and funeral service Saturday, 11 a.m., will be at Edward Swanson & Son Funeral Home, 30351 Dequindre, Madison Heights. Burial will be at White Chapel Cemetery, Troy. Memorials may be made to Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute, Capuchin Soup Kitchen or Michigan Humane Society.

Flora L. Miller

Flora L. Miller, 59, of Berkley, died Feb. 12, 2008, at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak. She was born March 28, 1948, in Detroit. Mrs. Miller was a longtime resident of metro Detroit. She married her husband, Thomas, Aug. 8, 1969. She graduated from Wayne State University with a master's degree in social work. Mrs. Miller is survived by her husband; children, Stephanie, Aaron and Jon; brothers, Ronald (Mary) Wagman and Edward (Bonnie) Wagman; granddaughters, Mikayla and Isabel; lifetime friends, Rebecca Knorp and Martha Johnson; and several nieces and nephews. Visitation, Friday, 3-9 p.m., will be at Sawyer-Fuller Funeral Home, 2125 W.12 Mile Road, Berkley. Mrs. Miller will lie in state Saturday, 10:30 a.m. until the 11 a.m. funeral service at Our Shepherd Lutheran Church, 2225 E. 14 Mile Road, Birmingham.Final resting place will be White Chapel Cemetery. Bernadette "Bunny" Ferman, 59, of Waterford, formerly of Ferndale, died Feb. 13, 2008, in Pontiac. She was born Jan. 26, 1949, in Ferndale. Father Solanus said, "Take you home and love you," and loved you were by your parents, Ray and Lauretta; brothers Ray and Bob; sisters-in-law Margie and Waldtraut; nieces and nephews Cathie, Michelle (James), Sharon, Marianne (Pete), Renee, Sandy (John), Kevin (Teresa), Eric (Irene), Scot (Beth), Michael, Tina (Matt) and Brian (Kim); Family Living Center caretakers Fannie, Mrs. Higgs, Regina, Virginia, Barb, Patricia, Bertina, Molly, Hattie, Leslie, Dana and Linda; and roommates, Sonya, Diane, Donna and Linda. Visitation Friday, 2-9 p.m., with a 7:30 rosary service, and funeral service Saturday, noon, will be at Spaulding & Curtin Funeral Directors, Ferndale.
