Presented by Robert Anderson, associate professor of English at Oakland University. Recent scholarly work has revealed an Austen much more adventurous than the skilled miniaturist, observer of manners and prose stylist she was thought to be. Anderson draws on her fiction and some of the recent film adaptations to reveal an edgier Jane Austen. To be precise, he will argue for a writer capable of crafting bawdy jokes and unafraid to engage in the most controversial political debates of her time – including slavery and the rights of women.
