Charles Semchena Sr., 87, a 50-year resident of Royal Oak, formerly of Highland Park, died Sunday, April 27, 2008, at home. He was born Sept. 4, 1920, in Fredericktown, Pa. A graduate of Highland Park High School where he was a Golden Gloves boxer, Mr. Semchena was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving on an aircraft carrier in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He was the founder and former owner of Oakland County Asphalt and Paving Co. In his youth, he was an exceptional athlete in many sports and coached Little League baseball. Surviving are his wife of 66 years, Genevieve (nee Sheremeta); children, Charles Jr. "Chuck" (Cathleen Cratch), a Royal Oak city commissioner, and Gail (Richard) Baker; grandson, Matthew Baker and many nieces and nephews. Visitation, 3-8 p.m. Tuesday, A.J. Desmond & Sons Funeral Home, 32515 Woodward, Royal Oak; burial, White Chapel Cemetery. Troy.
