Ruth Hempstead, 89, of Royal Oak, died March 3, 2008, at Cambridge East Nursing Home, Madison Heights. She was born Dec. 15, 1918, in Dryden. Mrs. Hempstead was a southern Oakland County resident since 1952. She graduated from Oxford High School in 1938. She worked for Sears in Oakland Mall from 1967 until 1979. She was a member of the Royal Oak Woman's Club, St. John United Methodist Church, and had volunteered more than 7,000 hours at William Beaumont Hospital. Mrs. Hempstead is survived by her children, Neil Hempstead and Dennis Hempstead; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Harland Hempstead, whom she married Aug. 23, 1941. Private services will be arranged by Wm. Sullivan & Son Funeral Home, Royal Oak.
