Alfred F. Hingst, 85, of Madison Heights, died Monday, Jan. 7, 2008, at home. He was born Sept. 12, 1922, in Hamburg, Germany. Mr. Hingst was a long time resident of Madison Heights. He was a member of St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church for more than 50 years. Mr. Hingst also was a member of the Madison Heights VFW Post 9507. He was a U.S. Army veteran serving in World War II in the South Pacific. He was Volunteer of the Year at the Madison Heights Nature Center 2007. He retired from Holy Sepulchre Cemetery after 35 years. Mr. Hingst was predeceased by a brother, Frederick Hingst. Surviving are his wife of 61 years, Catherine, whom he married July 26, 1946; children, Ronald A. (Diane) Hingst of Howell, Janet Golub of Waterford, Richard (Celeste) Hingst of Lapeer, Nancy (David) Barberi of Troy, Robert (Carol) Hingst of Madison Heights; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; and a sister, Margaret Merrill of Gladwin. Visitation, 3-9 p.m. Wednesday at Edward Swanson & Son Funeral Home, 30351 Dequindre, Madison Heights; scripture service, 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home; additional visitation Thursday from 9:30 a.m. until the 10 a.m. funeral mass at St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church, Hazel Park with Rev. Bede Louzon officiating; burial, St. Clement Cemetery, Center Line; memorials, St. Mary Magdalen or St. Vincent DePaul.
