Charles Calvin Hunter, 69, of Clawson, died Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2008, in Providence Hospital, Southfield. He was born in Detroit. Mr. Hunter, formerly of Royal Oak, retired in 1992 as a procurement officer after 36 years of employment with the U.S. Post Office in Royal Oak. He was a gifted athlete who excelled in football and baseball when he attended Royal Oak High School. Later in life he was an avid golfer who had several holes in one. His family described him as a jokester who was known as Chuck to family members and Charlie or El Chico to his friends. He also loved to attend family reunions. Mr. Hunter is survived by his companion, Mary Nasrey of Huntington Woods; children, William (Doreen) Hunter of Commerce City, Colo., Charles (Mary) Hunter Jr. of Phoenix, Ariz., Catherine (Mark Barrows) Hunter of Macomb Township, James (Renee) Hunter of Waterford, and John (Lorie) Hunter of Troy; former wife, Elva Hunter of Denver, Colo.; brothers, Ross (Judith) Hunter of Mount Clemens, Ray (Nancy) Hunter of Frederick, Md.; brother-in-law, Rowland Clark of Newport, Mich.; sisters-in-law, Gladys Hunter of Daytona Beach, Fla. and Julie Hunter of Royal Oak; seven grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Raymond and Esther Hunter; brothers, Richard and Jack Hunter; and sister, Barbara Clark. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Wm. Sullivan & Son Funeral Home, 705 W. 11 Mile Road (four blocks east of Woodward), Royal Oak, with the Rev. Dale Hunter officiating. Burial will be in White Chapel Cemetery, Royal Oak. Visitation is 5-9 p.m. today and 9-11 a.m. Thursday.
