Elaine Newcomb, 90, a Clawson resident for more than 60 years, died Aug. 25, 2007, at Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak. She was born April 13, 1917, in Eveleth, Minn., where she lived for 20 years. Mrs. Newcomb had a master's degree in education. She was a teacher for 16 years for Warren Consolidated Schools, and was a teacher in Royal Oak and in Minnesota. She was also a secretary at the British and New Zealand embassies in Washington, D.C. She enjoyed crafts, sewing, needlework, crocheting, painting, gardening and cooking. She was a member of a literacy program, teaching adults to read. She was a member of SARSP, a retired teachers organization (past president), a member of the Pontiac Retired Teachers organization and a member of the Royal Oak Recreation Department. She was a member of church choirs .for more than 50 years and also taught Vacation Bible School. She is survived by her husband, Ralph; daughters, Karen Newcomb-Baker (Verne) and Gail Ann Newcomb Johnson (Bob); sons, Roger (Sherry) Newcomb and Ralph James Newcomb; grandchildren, Nicholas, Jonathon, Ben and Ryan Newcomb and Christa Baker; great-grandson, Blake Newcomb; brothers, Earl (Marilyn) Swarthout, Ben (Evelth) Swarthout and Ralph Swarthout. Visitation is 2-5 p.m. and 6-9 p.m. Tuesday at A.J. Desmond & Sons Funeral Home, 2600 Crooks Road, Troy; services 11 a.m. Wednesday at The Apostolic Church of Auburn Hills; interment, Great Lakes National Cemetery; memorials may be made to the church; share memories at www.DesmondFuneralHome.com.
