McNeil, Don, died at the age of 89. Mr. McNeil spent 36 years at Ferndale High School as an economics teacher and administrator. While teaching he was selected as a Michigan Teacher of the Year in 1970. He graduated from Royal Oak High (later called Dondero) in 1943 during World War II. He served 3 1/2 years in the army military police in France and then Germany. He studied at the University of Heidelberg in Germany. Later he earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Wayne State University. His university education was paid for through the veteran’s GI Bill of Rights after World War II. Evelyn McNeil, his wife of 42 years died in 1992. Their daughter Christine lives in California. Don enjoyed traveling. He visited 97 countries and 45 of our states. He also enjoyed ball room dancing to the 1940’s music of the Big Band Era. At one of the senior dances he met Mrs. Betty McGilton, a widow, who also liked to dance.
