Hayes, Alice Kingsley Donald; was born in Detroit, Michigan, January 13, 1917 and died in Boynton Beach, Florida, February 5, 2015; aged 96 years and 23 days. She was the daughter of James Day Donald and Ila Mary Tufts and the fourth of their five children. On April 5, 1941, she married Raymond Eric Hayes, whom she met while a student at Wayne State University. They celebrated 50 years together before his death in 1991. A woman of energy, she was willing to try her hand at anything from camping to Cub Scout den mother to golf lessons, but her real loves were art and music. She shared that love by teaching art in the Detroit public school system, giving piano lessons to neighborhood children and helping to found the Pontiac Creative Arts Center in 1965. Active in her church and community, she served as president of Women’s Auxiliary groups, as a choir member and through the Stephen Ministry at Gloria Dei Lutheran in Auburn Hills, Michigan and Trinity Lutheran in Delray Beach, Florida. She was a member of the Delta Gamma Chi sorority and an “Inner Circle” donor to Old School Square in Delray Beach. A consummate hostess, she and Ray opened their home to family and friends, hosting parties, “Supper Club,” holiday gatherings and receptions. As the “first First Lady of Lake Angelus,” she supported her husband during his terms as president and as the first mayor of Lake Angelus, Michigan. Two stories illustrate her fashion sense. Suzi said she always wore a suit or dress with high heels and hose – even to the grocery store. When Linda returned from a shopping expedition to the fabric store, Alice recalled that one Saturday morning as she was buying a pattern and fabric, she ran into a friend who asked when she would be wearing the outfit. “Tonight,” Alice replied. Alice is survived by her children Robert W. Hayes, Boynton Beach, Florida and William D. Hayes, Winchester, Virginia; daughters-in-law L. Susan Hayes and Linda L. Wyman; nieces and nephews James Coggan, Elizabeth Turner, Donald Coggan, Barbara Renton, Philip Janke, Kenneth Janke, Mary Blacklock, Patricia Pervane, Nancy Graham, Arlene Jaynes, Jim Donald, John Donald, David Donald, Lee McNew and Lynda Stumpf and their families. A virtual remembrance will be held on Alice and Ray’s anniversary April 5, 2015. Family and friends are invited to share in the celebration on that date, wherever they may be. Boynton Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements. www.meaningfulfunerals.net/fh/home/home.cfm?&fh_id=11251Published in Daily Tribune on Feb. 12, 2015+Read More Share Listen to Obituary Remember Share a message, photo, or video below View guest book What will you miss most about Alice Hayes?
